Kate Beckinsale, born July 26, 1973 in Finsbury Park, London, is a British actress. She has followed in her parents footsteps, when she took up acting as a teenager. Initially she participated in several writing contests, and even took up French and Russian literature to expand her range of acting opportunities. She eventually dropped out of university in order to focus on acting.
Kate has been acclaimed off stage as well, making it to 16th spot on Maxim’s Hot 100, as well as placing 23rd on FHM 100 Sexiest Women list. She was also listed as England’s Number One Beauty by Hello! magazine.
She landed several roles in low budget movies, such as “Much Ado About Nothing”, “Laurel Canyon”, “Shooting Fish”, and “The Last Days of Disco”. Her first critically positive performance came in “Cold Comfort Farm”, where she acted alongside Eileen Atkins and Joanna Lumley among others.
Her first success came with her lead role in “Pearl Harbor”, where she replaced Charlize Theron after the latter turn down the part. The movie was a huge commercial success and gave Kate an opportunity to further her career by landing roles in such blockbusters as “Serendipity”, “Underworld”, Van Helsing”, and “The Aviator”. These appearances exposed her as a household name in the United States.
